Dutch Speed Skater Sven Kramer Loses 10,000 Meter after being DQ’d

I was watching the final pair in the Olympic 10,000 meter speed skating event and I was stunned when I saw the event that unfolded. The announcers and crowd had no idea what happened.

South Korea’s Lee Seung-Hoon won the mens 10,000 meters on after Dutch speed skater Sven Kramer was disqualified for mixing up a lane change early in the race that was not realized until he crossed the finish line.

Kramer, the 5,000-meter gold medalist, made the mistake as he hesitated on a lane change and chose the inside lane when in reality he should have skated the outside lane. Kramer ended up finishing the final eight laps and had the Gold Medal in the bag by beating the former leader a South Korean Lee Seung-Hoon with a time of 12:54.50 seconds.

Seung-Hoon ended up winning the gold and set a new Olympic record.

Kramer kicked a red lane marker with one of his skates and it skidded across the ice. He unzipped his racing suit, took off his glasses and threw them.

Lee and some others already knew Kramer was disqualified several laps before the end of the race, and the American newscasters passed off Lee’s celebration as being happy with having secured a silver medal.
