A man was incorrectly diagnosed as in a vegetative state when he was only paralyzed. The discovery was made when doctors performed a brain scan and discovered brain activity was near normal functioning. The man, Rom Houbens, can finally communicate, thanks to a neurologist’s research.
It was assumed that the crash Houbens was involved with put him in a vegetative state. Meaning awake but not conscious of his surroundings. But in fact Houbens has heard his family and nurses speak for decades.Dr. Steven Laureys of the University of Liege who made the discovery has published a recent study in which he states “4 out of 10 patients where we thought they were in a vegetative state in reality were not, [they] were minimally conscious.”
Laureys’ research is not standard testing at hospitals, meaning in rare situations doctors will miss signs that someone is fully aware while completely the patient is in fact paralyzed.
“I shall never forget the day when they discovered what was truly wrong with me — it was my second birth,” Houbens told the German magazine Der Spiegel, communicating via special keyboard.
